TWO SIGNIFICANT SHIFTS occur this week: We enter a new lunar cycle with the Virgo New Moon (10:29 p.m. PDT on Tuesday / 5:29 a.m. GMT on Wednesday), and a new season begins when the Sun enters Libra on Friday (1:01 p.m. PDT / 8:01 p.m. GMT).
As this is our first New Moon since the Solar Eclipse on August 21, it provides an opportunity to make a new start and to access different perspectives on all that has occurred in the last four to six weeks. And moving into a new season -- whether is it autumn in the Northern Hemisphere or spring in the Southern -- always offers us a chance to shift gears and focus more on where we are going instead of where we have been.
Both events are also evidence of the constancy of the heavens and the Earth, whose courses continue always onward, undaunted. These cosmic but very physical role models remind us of the value of persistence, nonattachment, surrender, and faith.
THE WEEK BEGINS with some uncomfortable "minor" planetary aspects. Monday looks like we'll be dealing with some frustrations when things don't go according to plan. We'll want to be careful not to take action from that place of irritation, as it might be tempting to do something -- anything -- just so that we can feel like we're moving forward.
The Sun and Moon oppose Chiron at the time of Tuesday's New Moon. When the Wounded Healer is involved in an event, we tend to experience both the reminder of latent fears or wounds and the potentials of healing those same scars. Through the influence of Chiron in compassionate Pisces, we are more sensitive to our own and others’ suffering this week. We will continue to feel that oneness throughout the upcoming lunar cycle.
THE NEW MOON is aligned with three fixed stars that astrologer Roderick Kidston calls "The Sacred Trio." He writes that the late degrees of Virgo, where the stars are located, have "a very sacred quality. Something profound happens here, giving a new definition to the idea of soul growth and personal development."
The three stars, and their individual qualities, are:
- Labrum: Aspiration, ambition, determination, intelligence, creative endeavors, tremendous inner and outer growth
- Benetnash: Catharsis, transformation, emotional shifts, release of what is finished, challenges that promote great growth
- Zavijava: Protection, justice, order, generosity, spiritual and material bounty
KIDSTON comments further on how these three stars work together when they are activated, as they are by our New Moon this week:
"Zavijava seems to be a protective seal which the heavens have set on the exalted idealism of Labrum, and the great catharses and changes of Benetnash. It protects the vision quest of the former, and supports and helps heal the profound transformations of the latter.
"In world affairs, Benetnash can be difficult, but this star isn't just a seal of fateful doom. The interplay of these stars is something to treasure, not fear. And because Benetnash sits between the two happy stars, its influence will without exception have at least one helpful support, and often two.
"When we engage with Labrum, Benetnash and Zavijava, we are treading on sacred ground. The varied synergies created by this trio are always interesting, sometimes challenging, and often extraordinary and uplifting."
WITH THE ENERGIES of these three fixed stars behind it, we appear to be entering an especially powerful lunar cycle that will affect us both physically and spiritually. Wounds will be exposed so that healing can begin. The challenges that we face will accelerate our soul growth in extraordinary ways.
The Sabian symbol for the degree of the New Moon builds on those themes of change and growth:
A baldheaded man who has seized power: The sheer power of personality in times that call for decision.
Here is a portion of astrologer Dane Rudhyar's interpretation of this symbol:
"There comes a time when obsolescent patterns of order have to be radically and relentlessly challenged. Catabolic personages emerge to seize power and dictate decisions that alter the structures of society; or within an individual life, an intense urge for cathartic changes mobilizes the will, and traumatic decisions are made. At this stage, we face the unpostponable necessity for decision and transformation."
TWO DAYS AFTER the lunation, the Sun enters Libra and we move into the next season of the Earth's natural cycle. A chart run for the time of the Equinox is said to provide insights into how the next three months will unfold.
This seasonal "birth chart" contains a cardinal t-square between Jupiter in Libra, Uranus and Eris in Aries, and Ceres in Cancer. (In essence, we are working with three-quarters of the cardinal grand cross that was part of the Solar Eclipse chart -- Pluto is no longer in range, so we've lost one leg of the configuration.)
This t-square challenges us to release our attachment to what has been. It is time to let go of old protections and defenses that have outworn their usefulness and now serve only to limit our evolutionary progress. We are also called to consider what "justice" means, and the fairness with which we treat others as co-inhabitants of our planet Earth. With Ceres active in the t-square, there is the potential for continuing developments and disruptions that affect homes and homelands.
THE SUN-CHIRON OPPOSITION appears in the Equinox chart, as part of a t-square with Saturn. This configuration challenges us to overcome our feelings of powerlessness. It requires that we see reality clearly enough to know what we can do on the physical plane to make a difference. But, it also requires that we bring faith to all of our dealings, trusting that those things that we cannot control are in Good Hands.
There is also an earth grand trine in the Equinox chart, involving Mars and Mercury in Virgo, Pallas Athene in Taurus, and Pluto in Capricorn. This configuration supports us in moving forward and creating lasting results for our efforts, as we implement new inventive solutions to old problems.
Hallelujah.
NEW MOON RITUAL: If you watched the YouTube video we recorded about the August eclipse, you may remember hearing Elsie Kerns mention "New Moon abundance checks." If you're curious about how to do this simple ritual, here's a link to Elsie's short YouTube video explaining how it works: New Moon Abundance Check.
Be sure to let me know if you have spectacular results!
IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: This is a year of endings and new beginnings. You are overcoming old fears that have held you back, and learning how to trust in the intuitive guidance you receive. This process of healing will not happen overnight, but your sincere practical efforts and your attention to spiritual growth are rewarded with manifestations that will significantly improve your life.
