Dictionary image, depicting ban of letting agent fees

The government has finally approved the Tenant Fees bill, which would ban letting agents and landlords charging ridiculous letting fees.

This means a ban on things like reference, credit check, administration, and contract renewal fees.
What's in the bill?
This great news comes almost three years after the ban on letting fees was first announced in Autumn 2016.

Early in 2018, we successfully closed a potential loophole in the bill which would have allowed bad landlords and letting agents to continue charging ridiculous fees under the term ‘default fees’.

A whopping 4,283 Shelter supporters emailed their MP about default fees – with 335 tweeting their MP, and 68 sending us examples of what they had been charged which helped close this loophole.

All in all, the ban on fees would not have happened without the campaigning of people like you. Thank you!

The bill passing wraps up a campaign which began in 2013, and finally comes to an end today.

Officially, the bill comes into force on 1 June 2019. We eagerly await that day!
